This introductory workshop will cover some important aspects of design basics and the data visualization process, tailored specifically for geographical representations of data. Attendees will be introduced to some historical cartographic visualizations and various stimulating ways to recontextualize what we consider “a map.” By the end of this workshop, attendees will learn challenges, opportunities, and strategies for visualizing aspects of their scholarship in meaningful ways. Key topics will include a brief overview of design principles, a history of geospatial humanities projects, strategies for the extraction of geocoded data from textual sources, and a discussion of data visualization practices.
